class=\"hps\">greater understanding of<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">maritime<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">\u00c5land<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">by<\/span>:<\/p><ul><li class=\"hps\">local<\/span>, regional and international\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">contexts<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>The Trust runs the \u00c5land Maritime Museum and the tall ship Pommern, \u00c5land\u2019s top two visitor attractions. The Maritime Museum is open all year and the Pommern from May through to September. The Trust has thirteen permanent staff and seasonal staff when needed. In addition, the Trust is fortunate to have a large volunteer corps that makes a vital contribution into many different areas.<\/p><p>The Trust\u2019s board is made up of seven members, of which three are nominated by the \u00c5land Nautical Club and four by the Government of \u00c5land. Members sit on four-year terms.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-76f473b3 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"76f473b3\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75ea2c89 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75ea2c89\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A brief history<\/h3><p>Our origins lie in the 1920s when \u00c5land sea captain Carl Holmqvist started to collect nautical objects, realising the days of sailing ships were over.\u00a0 In 1935 he co-founded \u00c5land Nautical Club with the aim of establishing a maritime museum for \u00c5land.\u00a0 The museum building, designed by architect Jonas Cedercreutz, was completed in 1949 and five years later the \u00c5land Maritime Museum opened to the public.<\/p><p>Through contributions from \u00c5land seafarers and shipping companies the collections continued to grow.\u00a0 In 1986 \u00c5land Nautical Club donated all museum objects, archives and the library to the newly formed trust \u00c5land Maritime Museum.<\/p><p>An extension as well as comprehensive renovation of the original building commenced in the autumn of 2009. The museum re-opened on 26<sup>th<\/sup> April 2012. In March 2015 the Trust was entrusted full management of the historic tall ship Pommern, owned by the Town of Mariehamn. Major investments are currently being done to into preservation and public engagement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section
