A group of people, consisting of a small boy, a girl in her early teens, a middle-aged woman, and an old couple consisting of a man and a woman are scattered in the picture. They are in a fake poop deck inside a building. The group is gathered around a large rudder. The boy stands on the far left on a bench and looks away from the picture through binoculars. Behind the helm stands the middle-aged woman on the left and the elderly lady on the right. On the far right, the old man can be seen with a sextant raised in front of his face. The girl is standing with a cap in front of the helm with a confident expression. Behind the middle-aged woman stands a glazed stuffed albatross on a raised console. To the right of the man is a brass bell. Behind the group are windows where daylight streams in.
Two men are visible in the picture. At the far left and further back, a white man in black clothes stands with his back turned away from the camera and looks up, a little to the right, at tools used to build ships, which are lined up against a white wall. A young black man in a black sweater and jeans stands further forward, in the center of the picture, and studies a stand where you can see a model of a ship that is supposed to be under construction.
