The Cape Horn Room

Amicale Internationale des Capitaines au Long Cours de Cape Horniers var en exklusiv klubb för sjöfarare som rundat det ökända Kap Horn i ett lastbärande segelfartyg.

Föreningen grundades 1936 och hade sitt huvudsäte i St Malo, Frankrike. Eftersom världens sista segelfartygsflotta hade Mariehamn som hemort, hade Ålandssektionen under långa tider den högsta koncentrationen av äkta Kaphornare bland sitt medlemsskap. Eftersom det inte fanns någon möjlighet till återväxt, varken på Åland eller internationellt, valde medlemmarna att lägga ner all verksamhet och upplösa föreningen. Det gjordes formellt på världskongressen i St Malo 2003.

För att hålla minnet av A.I.C.H. och Kap Horn vid liv grundades 2003 Ålands Kap Hornförening. Den är öppen för alla som är intresserade av segelsjöfart. Ett stående inslag på föreningens agenda är buffellunchen som traditionsenligt äts första torsdagen varje månad på restaurang Nautical.

Dokumentären om de sista Kap Hornarna

Dokumentären “Vi rundade Hornet” visas löpande i Kap Horn-rummet. I filmen berättar åländska sjömän om sin tid på segelfartyg och hur det var att runda det ökända hornet. Filmen är gjord av Per-Ove Högnäs, Pelago Film. Ca 14 min.

Engine-powered shipping was late in coming on Åland but once it had been established, it became the motor for modernizing Åland society at large.

From the founding of Mariehamn in 1861 it has been a maritime town. This is were the professional shipping industry developed and this is were successful master mariners build their splendid homes.
